| The
largest of the British Virgin Islands, Tortola offers a relaxed
atmosphere for travelers arriving by air and sea. As most Caribbean
islands, it has beautiful beaches such as famous Cane Garden Bay,
Brewer’s Bay and Smugglers Cove (to mention our favorites), lush
vegetation and year round warm weather. But unlike many other island
destinations, it does not have major hotels or huge developments.
Small hotels are scattered here and there with a handful rooms each.
No luxuries to be expected, not extreme efficiency either. Things
are done at the local’s pace, but eventually things get done. Rooms
are clean, food is good and dogs play on the beach. If looking for relaxation, nothing to do but enjoy life without complications, this place may be Heaven. Watch out for days when cruise ships arrive, and thousands of eager tourists take over. Locals dress up to receive the cash infusion that lasts a few hours, and staying tourists look for solitude in remote places of the island. If you do not arrive on your own boat, you can always take the ferry to visit the rest of the BVIs: Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada and surrounding islands. Or even venture to the US Virgin Islands: Saint John, Saint Thomas, Saint Croix and minor islands. In Tortola, more than on any other place, there is no pressure. Order one “Pain Killer” from the nearest bar, and while sipping the most delicious drink, you will find it easy to relax. |
