Adelaide in South Australia is a very beautiful city. With 1 million inhabitants you would expect traffic jams and noise. Despite its busy financial district and downtown, the pace is moderate and everything seems clean and well organized. Unlike Sydney and many other Australian cities, Adelaide was not settled by convicts but instead by rich English families. The city was planned along the Torrens River with parks and squares and a green belt surrounding it. Downtown Adelaide and the financial district have all the elements of a big metropolis. There are skyscrapers and malls and shops and restaurants and hotels. The traffic gets busy but again, avenues are wide and public transportation is excellent. There are even free buses that take you along 2 itineraries along the city, which are perfect for tourists with some free time. North Adelaide is where the more expensive residences are, also Melbourne Street with fancy shops and restaurants. Both parts of the city are connected by several bridges over the Torrens River, along which you can find beautiful parkland inhabited by a variety of birds, ducks and even black swans. When you have got to know Adelaide, it is hard to leave. And before you do, do not miss Glenelg, a nearby beach city; Barossa Valley, where world-famous wines are produced and the incredible Kangaroo Island (see separate link). We hope that our pictures have captured some of the beauty and spirit of Adelaide for you to enjoy. |
