Sydney
| When the Australian government commissioned an architect to build an Opera House that would become an icon to Sydney, they had a very bright idea. The Sydney Opera House with its unique and unmistakable shape is recognized everywhere as a symbol of Sydney, Australia, such as the Eiffel Tower belongs to Paris, France. Sydney is exciting, unique, sophisticated. Not bad for a city that was initially populated by convicts. Urban areas extend all around Sydney Harbor which is dominated by the also famous Harbor Bridge. Plenty of public transportation makes it easy for the tourist to move around. The ferry is ideal to connect different points of the harbor. If there is enough time, walking is the most fun as more details can be observed that may be missed from a bus or car. The Botanic Gardens offer great views of the harbor, the city and the Opera House. They are very well kept and birds are friendly and receptive to bread offerings. Of the many new species of birds and plants we spotted, the most unusual was a tree with very large fruits hanging; we later realized these “fruits” were oversized bats wrapped in their wings sleeping. Circular Quay (the area where the ferry terminal is), the Opera House and historic The Rocks can be best enjoyed walking. The Harbor Bridge can be crossed on foot for magnificent photo opportunities. More adventurous people not suffering from vertigo can take guided tours and climb the bridge. George Street can also be walked from The Rocks through the financial district. The newly developed Darling Harbor next to the Aquarium offers a shopping mall and a variety of restaurants of all types. The area is beautifully lit at night and taking the monorail is one of the easiest ways to get there and avoid traffic. Also recommended is a visit to the zoo and to Bondi Beach. Everything about Sydney is to be liked, including its people. Sydney shows a balance of modern architecture and beautiful nature that makes it a place to want to visit again and again. |
